Have You Seen The IdentiCat?

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

The identicat is on the lamb and has gone “Patrick Swayze” on us. The SecondLife 5-0 are looking for him, but he is nowhere to be found. Apparently he has been promoting Open Source activities while bboying around Sun island. It’s not illegal to talk about open source or bboy by themselves, but combined they are banned.
Rumor has it that the IdentiCat plans to hold an illegal meeting on 9/30 at 8AM PT on OpenSSO Enterprise, a highly controversial offering that has scared many traditional software vendors for it’s free-wheeling nature. OpenSSO has been the darling of the people and has been viewed as an identity “Robin Hood” for the masses. It is unknown whether or not the IdentiCat will show up, but local citizens have been circulating an online registration form to get people to attend the showdown!
SecondLife 5-0 are expected to be out in force!

Several weeks ago two men claimed to have discovered the existence of an IdentiCat in the woods of Sun Island in Second Life. The two men, Daniel Raskin and Jamie Nelson, promised physical evidence of the creature. According to Pat Patterson, head of a group called Searching for IdentiCat and a former farmer and haberdasher from England, “the video is proof that the IdentiCat lives! If you don’t believe us then join us September 30 in the forests of Sun Island to hear the IdentiCat talk about the magic of OpenSSO Enterprise 8. Register early because we’re expecting a very large crowd!”
Below is the first video ever captured of the magical IdentiCat in action . . .

“Unfortunately the company you work for is a competitor . . .”

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

Next week I attend Digital ID World, an identity funfest in Anaheim, CA. One of the great aspects of this event is the interaction of customers, vendors and analysts. That said, a strange thing occurred earlier in the week that really shocked me. A Sun colleague working on OpenSSO with me tried to register for a Monday workshop entitled “Enterprise Role Management Workshop: Leveraging Roles For Successful Identity Governance” and received an email back from Sailpoint stating . . .
“Unfortunately, the company you work for is a competitor of the sponsor for the Monday afternoon workshop, therefore we cannot allow your admittance to the session.”
Really!?!?!? My first reaction was WOAH! My second reaction was to laugh and realize this is why open source is so much better than proprietary solutions. With OpenSSO we’ll let you in, we’ll let you download the product, we’ll show you the source – hell, we’ll even let you submit fixes! Sailpoint, I personally invite any member of your organization to attend any of our OpenSSO workshops or events. In fact, I strongly believe that your participation would lead to a better dialogue and serve the attendees better.
Tear down that wall!
