Hey Waldo! You Can Run, But You Can’t Hide!

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

Steve Wilson and Oren Teich have recently posted blogs on the challenge of discoverability in the data center (and Oren has identified why his clothing is often wrinkled, but does not address issues of ring around the collar).
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve talked to large, Fortune 500 companies and learned that they have very little transparency around what they have deployed in their datacenter versus what they have licensed. My experience in the systems management space is that it’s a very crowded market with very complex offerings, but there are some very simple problems that have yet to be addressed.
Oren and Steve highlight this gap very clearly and talk about a new technology that Sun will be freely providing that allows sys admins to use standard discovery protocols such as Apple’s Bonjour/Zeroconf and SLP to discover assets on their local networks.
To learn more about this technology, called Sun Service Tags, please check out our newly released faq.and stay tuned for some upcoming announcements regarding Sun’s implementation of this technology to conquer the “Goliath” called discoverability.

I’m a Twit

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

OK. I gave Twitter a try and I like it so far. As you can see from my blog, I’ve incorporated Twitter so that people can now easily stalk me. My wife keeps on yelling at me, “What’s the point!” I don’t have a good answer. I tried to talk about Twitter as an example of RedShift to intellectualize it a bit and have made the case that this is research for my work at Sun, but I’m shoveling it a bit. I’ll blog once I find a real use for it other than mindless fun.

Oiy . . . Twitter on a Global Scale

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

I have yet to be mesmerized by Twitter . . . until today. My friend Nick pinged me with a link to twittervision and I was hypnotized watching real time activity on a Google map. I’m not sold on the usefulness of twitter yet, but it sure did make me think about giving it a try.

Sun Connection Video

Friday, May 4th, 2007

I wanted to plug the latest blog by Oren Teich. There’s a new 10 minute Sun Connection video on BigAdmin that allows people to view a demonstration of Sun Connection’s update functionality. The demo shows Solaris updates, but Sun Connection can also be used to manage Red Hat (including Red Hat 5), Suse and Mainframe systems. In addition to updates, Sun Connection also has powerful provisioning functionality, but that’s a separate demo. Enjoy!
